What is the value of ants in my garden and patio? Nature normally has a fine reason for everything, a general approach which I applaud wholeheartedly.
The purpose of ants in my back garden and on my patio escapes me, though. They don’t loosen up the soil, it is as rock-hard as always. They don’t feed the local ant eaters, at least not to my knowledge. I cannot see any plants flourishing due to symbiosis with the ants, and neither can I think of any other value.
I friend suggested that they look after the black flies, but that didn’t seem a compelling reason for keeping them, neither. I poisoned mine and am now able to sit at my garden desk without being crawled upon constantly.
Have I shifted my back garden’s ecological equilibrium?
