The Value of Ants

Ant
What is the value of ants in my garden and patio? Nature normally has a fine reason for everything, a general approach which I applaud wholeheartedly.

The purpose of ants in my back garden and on my patio escapes me, though. They don’t loosen up the soil, it is as rock-hard as always. They don’t feed the local ant eaters, at least not to my knowledge. I cannot see any plants flourishing due to symbiosis with the ants, and neither can I think of any other value.

I friend suggested that they look after the black flies, but that didn’t seem a compelling reason for keeping them, neither. I poisoned mine and am now able to sit at my garden desk without being crawled upon constantly.

Have I shifted my back garden’s ecological equilibrium?

  1. Hi,

I’m a reporter at a free weekly called the London
Informer. Each week, we feature a different blog from
west London and we are interested in featuring yours.
Basically, we give a bit of info about the blog and
blogger together with an extract from the site.
If you’re happy to be featured, we would need a pic of
    yourself and your name.

    Thanks,
