African Queen

Some things never change. I watched John Huston‘s 1951 movie The African Queen some while ago, which features memorable conversations between Rose (Katharine Hepburn) and Charlie (Humphrey Bogart) like this one (quoted from memory):

Rose: Charlie, let’s take the boat down the river this way.
Charlie: Oh no we can’t do that Miss; this is crocodile-infested water with impassable falls and rapids. We’d be sure to die.
Rose: Oh Charlie, let’s try
Charlie: All right Miss.

My favourite scene however, must be the one in which Rose almost faints from heat and exhaustion. Charlie explains that she feels a bit under the weather and makes her a nice cup of tea. Thus replenished, she immediately gets better (and they survive the impassable falls).

Well I ain’t sorry for you no more, ya crazy, psalm-singing, skinny old maid!

  1. Quite right too. There aren’t many things that can’t be fixed with a nice cup of tea.

I shall have to re-watch that film, I haven’t seen it for about 35 years :-)
